Stroller Walking - Lose Weight and Get Fit

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Stroller walking is a great way to lose weight, get fit and spend time with your baby. Walking helps to burn fat and build muscle while strengthening the cardiovascular system. Walking also benefits your emotional health and has been demonstrated to improve moods and reduce anxiety.

In addition to the benefits you will receive from stroller walking, your baby will also receive many benefits. Most babies enjoy being outdoors and watching the sights and sounds around them. You can make it an educational experience by pointing out the exciting things you encounter as you walk, such as a bird, truck or bicycle.

Here are 6 tips to ensure that stroller walking is enjoyable for you and your baby.

1. Use a jogging or an all-terrain, walking stroller. These types of strollers have a lighter frame than a traditional stroller and three wheels instead of four. These features make it much easier to push the stroller uphill and over uneven terrain. These types of strollers also have important safety features, such as a handbrake and tether, which prevent the stroller from rolling too fast and getting away from you.

2. Stay relaxed. Keep a relaxed grip on the handlebars of the stroller. A tight grip can cause tension and pain in your neck and back.

3. Stay in your Target Heart Rate Zone. It can be easy to become absorbed with baby and slow your pace and calorie burning potential. To ensure you are burning as many calories as possible, stay within your Target Heart Rate Zone, which is 60 to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate.

4. Make it fun. Bring snacks or toys to keep baby occupied. Remember to point out interesting sights or sounds so that baby can hear your voice.

5. Adjust when necessary. You may find that you will have to adjust your walking routine as baby gets older. For example, an active toddler might not appreciate sitting in a stroller for thirty minutes or longer. Adjust your route to include a trip to the park or some other interesting destination that will allow your toddler to get out of the stroller and explore for a short time.

6. Join a stroller walking group. There are stroller walking groups in many cities. These groups often incorporate a total body workout into the walks and you’ll get support and friendship from other mothers.

These tips will help to ensure that your stroller walking time is enjoyable for both you and your baby. You’ll soon see that you can lose weight while spending quality time with your baby.
